Abstract

Business incubation is increasingly delivered as a portfolio of material, advisory, financial, technical, learning, and relational services, yet these components need not relate equally to venture capabilities. This study examines how five dimensions of incubator support are associated with the competitive capabilities of incubated startups in Algeria. A cross-sectional survey of 50 respondents representing ventures associated with 19 business incubators was analyzed primarily using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlations, group comparisons and model-based analyses were treated as secondary evidence. Respondents reported a high overall level of incubator services (M = 4.14), whereas competitive capabilities were moderate (M = 3.43). Overall services were positively associated with competitive capabilities (r = 0.640, p<0.001). The association was strongest for communication and relationships (r = 0.648), followed by technical and financial support (r = 0.597), training and workshops (r = 0.580), material resources (r = 0.420), and human resources and consulting (r = 0.339). The results show a heterogeneous pattern of service-level associations, with relational, technical-financial, and learning-oriented support displaying the largest observed coefficients in this sample. They also show that high reported service provision can coexist with only moderate competitive capabilities, distinguishing support delivery from capability formation. Because the design is cross-sectional and observational, the findings are interpreted as associations rather than causal effects.
