This study examines the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) within Gauteng’s healthcare system, analyzing its potential to support sustainable and equitable delivery amidst existing disparities. Employing a mixed-methods approach of surveys and interviews with healthcare professionals, the research investigates AI’s impact on accessibility, affordability and service quality. It specifically addresses the risk that uneven implementation between urban and rural areas may exacerbate healthcare inequalities, while also considering the influence of socio-economic factors and generational differences in technology perception. Findings indicate AI possesses transformative potential to extend healthcare reach through tools like diagnostic aids and telemedicine, yet its adoption is moderated by stakeholder trust and competency. Analyzed through the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), receptivity varies significantly by generation, with younger demographics demonstrating greater openness. The study concludes that realizing AI’s benefits requires targeted training, culturally sensitive design and robust investments in digital infrastructure and ethical safeguards. Strategic recommendations emphasize that equitable integration hinges on proactive measures to ensure inclusivity, build trust and align technological deployment with the diverse needs of South Africa’s population.
