Digital marketing has transformed the way organizations communicate with and engage consumers by creating increasingly interactive, personalized and technology-enabled marketing environments. This paper reviews the existing literature on digital marketing and consumer engagement, focusing on the growing influence of social media, digital content, electronic word-of-mouth, mobile marketing, artificial intelligence, personalization, consumer data and digital experiences. The review highlights that digital marketing has shifted consumers from passive recipients of marketing communication toward active participants who interact with brands, create and share content and influence other consumers. The literature also indicates that meaningful consumer engagement is influenced by the quality of digital experiences, trust, transparency, authenticity and concerns regarding privacy and responsible data use. At the same time, digital engagement may generate both positive outcomes, such as stronger relationships, loyalty and advocacy and negative outcomes, including criticism, negative word-of-mouth and consumer resistance. The paper consolidates these perspectives and discusses the major developments, opportunities and challenges associated with consumer engagement in the digital marketing environment. The review provides a broader understanding of how technological and consumer-oriented dimensions of digital marketing are shaping contemporary consumer–brand relationships.
